The future is filled with more question marks than periods. Wars and rumors of war echo about us. Glimpses of life are fleeting around us. This blog, even, has laid dormant over the months. Accruing visitors both random and regular (thank you, Google Analytics), perhaps wondering what the journey has brought to Leia and I. We've graduated from Divinity school, and while still best of friends, laid our cameras to rest to reflect with a different lens for a while. We love photographing weddings. But, vocationally, we aren't wedding photographers. Not in the business model sense. Not given some of the things we've been graced and called to see. And, well, not in this economy!

But there are moments in life that are certain. In the midst of tenuous footing, there are people we can hold on to. Stories of hope that warm the very lifeblood of our hearts. Gifts of mercy that stir our imaginations. Notes of laughter that dance through our souls. And, actually, love.

The love of our friends, Jara and Kenley, has been great cause to dust off the shelves of the blog. Since they were, in effect, blog-stalkers prior to our working with them, it seems the obvious thing to do. Their story is one that has unfolded for the past five years, and it is one that we are honored to have captured in its unfolding into eternity. We were gifted by them, not only with ebony pashminas, soul kitchens, new friends and old friends, family, purple flowers, red doors, and much dancing (just to reference a few key memories), but with an opportunity to be reminded that love, actually, is patient. Is kind. And does prevail.

So, here's to wonderful Jara + Kenley, who did indeed "Thai" the knot. To read more about them, check out Jara's wedding blog at http://iloveyoulove.wordpress.com ... We made our way safely home to our theological studies after a powerful, amazing summer. Nothing of our belongings got lost, except perhaps our hearts, which are forever buried in the depths of the amazing women and men we encountered in Kolkata, India, and all around the world. Come to think of it, we don't suppose that our hearts would exactly count as belonging to us, anyway ...

Ah, yes.

Well, as many of you have been pining for pictures, know that they are coming. From the Middle East. From South Asia. And from some of the awesome and amazing shoots we've had over the past few months with friends and family who have supported us. While we have been swamped with all of the work and the expectation of returning so quickly to a hectic pace of school, work, and business (yes ... I intentionally left out "social life," *smile*), we have not forgotten the amazing love and support that we felt from you all along this journey!

That said, be on the lookout for lots of posts and announcements and information and updates! We promise!

Love,
Amey and LeiaLeia Adelle Photographyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764657185268317545noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652566550270178165.post-59203104199765779352008-08-05T14:17:00.002-04:002008-08-05T14:19:33.697-04:00On Christ and CookiesBeams from the scorching Indian sun mercilessly sent familiar beads of sweat careening down my face. I again attempted to wipe the monsoon season humidity from my dirtied cheeks. My effort was futile. We inched further along one of the muddied side roads of Tangra, a slum in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), India. This day the monsoon rains had brought the frequent flooding not uncommon at this time of year. What normally was a 10-minute walk now took a half hour, and my impatience mounted with the palpable heat.

I focused intently on my own feet. Avoiding the assortment of trash notoriously strewn about the streets. Avoiding the puddles of water that floated raw sewage in the aftermath of the afternoon showers. Avoiding the crowds gawking at my foreign features.

I was ungrateful. Exhausted from the heat. Annoyed that the hem of my pants was soaked. That mud and God knows what else had seeped into my shoes and made a home between my toes. That people didn’t point or laugh inconspicuously. That the smell of curry mixed with stench of street trash and holy cows made me nauseous.

Until I saw her. Rather, she saw me. A little girl no more than four or five. Stringy hair matted with dust. Distended belly displaying malnourishment. Simple shirt worn through with holes that barely covered the top of her thighs. Her circumstance was the picture of poverty, but her smile was the picture of joy. She was standing on the street, eating a tiny cookie, the crumbs of which freckled her pudgy cheeks. She stood frozen, peering at us through doleful brown eyes.

I half expected her to run back to the crowded room that was obviously home, crying from behind the knees of her mother. Instead she offered us her hand. It seemed casual, but our approach unveiled reality. This little girl was offering us her cookie.

Myriad thoughts flashed through my mind, first of disbelief, then through the flood of grace no monsoon could measure. My heart raced to the story in Luke of the widow’s offering:

“[Jesus] looked up and saw rich people putting their gifts into the treasury; he also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. He said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; for all of them have contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on." (Luke 21:1-4, NRSV)

This little girl was offering me, a stranger, all she had. As I shook my head, sure this was a mistake, the girl gestured again her pleasure in offering to us what may have easily been her daily bread.

Christ speaks of righteousness in terms of those who give to the least of these, “for I was hungry and you gave me food.” Suddenly in that moment I faced my own poverties, of compassion, justice, commitment, love, faith, and hope. But that little girl, with the physical offering of her tiny biscuit, spiritually invited me to the abundant banquet of Christ, to taste and see the Lord is good.

God is good. God is good here in Kolkata. In the midst of broken realities, from slums to sex trafficking, the love of Christ is that much more sweet. Not because foreigners are here, or even because Christians are here. Rather, because Christ has always been here.

That little girl was Christ to me. I thought that my momentary suffering justified my attitude. I thought that my love, sometimes my food, too, was the gift to be offered. But that little one reminded me that we, the Church, the body of Christ, rely on each other. That we need those who represent the wounds in that body for the working of our salvation. That there is so much left for us to receive.

My eyes have been opened to the heart of God for the poorest of the poor in the world. In response, I pray I am as willing to give my life, my possessions, and my love as freely as that sweet child saw worthy to give unto me. Amen.Leia Adelle Photographyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764657185268317545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652566550270178165.post-5704650290080279202008-08-03T23:11:00.003-04:002008-08-05T14:20:27.964-04:00The Kingdom of Kolkata(from Leia's journal)

Most days I walked with my head down. At first I told myself it was so that I could watch my steps as to avoid tripping and falling into the compost lined streets of Kolkata. And even though there is validity to this argument, it’s not wholly true. Kolkata’s streets are lined with beggers. Men, women, children, all homeless, jobless, hopeless. I stared at my feet, yes, to concentrate on each step, but more so that I wouldn’t have to concentrate on my surroundings; so I wouldn’t have to think about, or take in what I was having to see, having to smell, and sometimes even having reach out and touch me.

I discovered my reasons on the Metro, the subway line in Kolkata. Here, those who can afford this luxury, travel throughout the city. The train is usually filled with middle class Bengali’s headed to work, school, or shopping. It is here that I truly discovered the real reasons for my downcast head. Sitting just across from me were two other Indian young ladies. Much like any other day on the train, just about everyone was staring, some whispering, some pointing and even laughing. I held my head down, and realized that when I did so, I didn’t have to see my own objectification. Staring at my feet allowed me to escape the task of bearing witness to it. This was my escape from the world around me.

In this city, I am the rarity. People stare at me, sometimes puzzled, sometimes disgusted, sometimes just stare, at my western clothes and failed salwar attempts, at the strange coiled locs that are my hair. They stare at my mouth and gawk at the weird accent and strange words that come from my mouth. Yes, here I am the rarity. How strange for me this is. How strange indeed for my western eyes. Here, in Kolkata, India, in the State of West Bengal, where every boy has the same hair cut, every man the same mustache, and every women the same hairstyle, the African American with western clothes and the southern accent is peculiar.

But for my western eyes, when they were ready to see, saw this world much differently. My downcast head only allowed me to escape momentarily. Soon, looking down forced me to witness children sleeping on the street. Infants playing only inches away from raging traffic while their parents rested on the concrete that I use as a sideway and that they use as a home. My lowered head forced my eyes to see the brokenness of elderly women, probably widows, with tattered clothing and missing limbs, unable to stand, unable to walk, unable to work, unable to eat, only able to sit on the fringes of life and death. And when I closed my eyes, feeling tired and betrayed by myself whether morning or night, still I was unable to escape my surroundings. My dreams were filled with them. And in the mornings, during my breakfast, I could hear the cries of a child, wails from the depths of his empty belly, the same hour I filled mine.

How strange is this world that we live in. How strange indeed. Here, I am odd, a foreigner, a stranger, a phenomenon, while poverty, begging, homelessness, and disparity remain the norm. Here the African American and her western garb are displeasing ascetically, while the tattered clothes and dirt covered innocent faces of children are the rule. Here my presence is continually queried while the perpetuation of the continued commodification of the bodies of women of all ages goes unquestioned. How strange is this world that we live in, how strange indeed.Leia Adelle Photographyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764657185268317545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652566550270178165.post-33022220262161596392008-08-02T04:34:00.003-04:002008-08-02T05:05:53.409-04:00Checking in ...... it feels like it has been so long since we've had a chance to reach out, connect, reflect here. Internet seems sparse, and when it is available, our tiredness and fatigue seem to so insubordinantly rush in.

Needless to say, the last few weeks have been amazing beyond words, phrases, or pictures. Here is the blowby version, though, of what is burning in our hearts and minds these days ...

.....

In Chennai, our hearts were broken as we walked through the memorials of the Word Made Flesh children who have passed from life into eternity. Their headstones, tangled among the hundreds of monuments in the cemetary, were stone monuments of courage and conviction. These children died with dignity and with love. And yet, we can hear their cries from beyond their graves, echoing in the eerie silence we found lurking within the cemetary walls, on behalf of their brothers and sisters, our brothers and sisters, who are the among the poorest of the poor in this world. Who will care for them? Who will respond? Will we? Will I?

As we sat in silence, with thoughts and prayers and emptiness, a small hearst pulled into the dirt drive. As it passed, the open door revealed but a glimpse of the tiny coffin within. It was a child ... someone's beloved. Another who walked through the valleys. Another who reminded us of the gift of life, if we choose to give it. If we choose to share in the sacrifice that brings about abundance ...

...
Later that day, as we travelled with "Arthi" and "Devi," sweet sisters and dear friend, I again saw abundance. Arthi noticed I was scared of the raging traffic on laneless Indian roadways. I've almost been hit. I've been in a car that hit someone. I've seen an accident happen. I've had dinner with an old man who is recovering from a hit-and run. I never said a word, but Arthi noticed ... as we winded through the city streets, and were preparing to cross yet another road, I looked up to see her wide smile beaming at me. Her tiny hand grabbed at mine and, positioning herself between me and the traffic, led me across the street.

Once we had made our way, she continued to squeeze my hand, laughing graciously, not letting me go. Even though I didn't "need" it in the moment, she still held on to me. Even when I felt comfortable, she still remained. Something akin to the Holy Spirit ...

.....
Arthi and Devi didn't just touch me then. They begged Phileena Auntie to take them to a dress shop. Never before had they asked her for anything, and she eagerly obliged. As it were, the dress-shopping was a hoax. The sisters has planned the entire thing to get P into the dress shop to buy for her a salwar. P pleaded that they wouldn't ... that it was too much, too costly ... that she should be the one lavishing upon them.

But as I watched, I saw in their eyes the hearts of worship, the love of God within them. As they poured out their love, like the most expensive and fragrant of perfumes, on their dearest Phileena. As they sacrificed, in the most logical and rational of senses needlessly, from their version of an alabaster box. What grace, what love, what power in their gifts ... more than the tangible or practical items of clothing, this was a sign of extravagant love, of abundance, of grace in a world where scarcity menancingly looms. To have the heart that Arthi and Devi have for us, but for those who are most despised in this world ... to lavish our love upon them ... to be the light of Christ in darkness ... these are the lessons slowly, painfully, meticulously etching themselves upon our hearts ... God is here.Leia Adelle Photographyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764657185268317545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652566550270178165.post-21908625714914352792008-07-07T04:15:00.002-04:002008-07-07T04:30:05.534-04:00An Unlikely CrossThe worn plaster, tinged ever so slightly pink, formed the unintended shape of a Cross. Perhaps, in reality, it didn't -- ay random insterection of the rough interior facades could have formed the simple, perpendicular symbol that, for me, held so much meaning.

I found myself glancing at its unimpressive speldnor regularly. Just left of the single threadbare lightbulb that dimly lit the dngy walls we didn't completely wish to see. As things often go when traveling - as UNexpected - we had found ourselves hot, tired, but expectant in the city of Chennai. As we rode through kilometres of laneless traffic free-for-all, we found ourselves at our supposed residence ... but with no reservations.

Disheartened, we settled for a guest house a short "auto" ride away -- a place that Chris would describe as "really local." A place I was inclined to describe as a bit of a dump. The sipid heat only encouraged our disappointment - our new home was, even by missionary measure, filthy.

We set about, though, in high hopes, false as they perhaps were. While we were prepared to live simply, our exhaustion did not give way to the stark reality that we would now be "roughing it." Still, with electricity (when it remained connected - it failed without fail multiple times a day), a Wester toilet (of sorts - but still a luxury), and a television that blared Bollywood, we were still living as royalty compared to most of the city's population.

The cross on the wall took shape.

With each day, I could feel my body slowly adjusting to the stifling heat. The swelter of cobwebs and ants somehow began to go less and less noticed, even when one morning's sun awoke us to their infiltration of our packs. I slowly began to appreciate the tacky stickers, hidden by day, that illumined in day-glow green the paths of unknown stars and planets across our crumbling ceiling. We strung up simple rope, tied at one end to the decorative iron gate that guarded our second story window, coiled tightly at the other end to the protruding socket of our single light bulb. A makeshift clothesline, upon which we hung the assortment of "quick-dry" belongings harbored in our single packs, their colors providing a welcome interruption to the blank mauve walls of our small cell.

As we met more and more family and friends in Chennai, our own small room became more and more our sanctuary, our home. Amidst the busy Anna Nagar street, incessant beeping of traffic, blaring music arguing with the announcements of prayer from the miniaret of the nearby Mosque, the ringing phone always left unanswered, locks and chains and doors and rumbling fancs in a cacophony of opening and closing and keeping cool - somehow, in the midst of it all, we found peace.

And while the dim light from our lone lightbulb did little to keep the shadows of our tucked-away home at bay, it perfectly outlined the cross that became increasingly more clear, in my eyes and in my heart.

"You are the light of the world ..."

Hot. Sticky. Sweaty. Salty. Dingy. Dull. Dirty. Protruding. Inadequate. Low-Watt. But abundant to make clear the cross of Christ - that beautiful sign of hope and love in the midst of suffering and brokenness - strikingly clear in the place we'd least expect.Leia Adelle Photographyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764657185268317545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652566550270178165.post-34478953491256088432008-07-07T04:04:00.002-04:002008-07-07T04:07:03.293-04:00Psalm 23"The Lord is my shepherd. Pong.

Everyone was feeling a bit tired, so we decided to see a bit of Bangkok at night. Khao San Road. Where the hippies hang, and all the Western tourists find themselves. Here you can buy random trinkets, find two-for-one drink specials, and indulge in henna tattoos and hair locks on the street.

Our guesthouse had a staff person flag down a tuk-tuk for us. It was a chance to ride in the Thai transportation of choice, to have the pungent open air fill our lungs as we took in the splendor of the royal city at night.

For only 100 baht, we sped around corners and down sidestreets, allured by the colorful lighting of temples we did not understand, enticed by the endless multitudes of street vendors preparing the delicious fare we could not recognize.

We arrived. Leia's locks caught the attention and admiration of the Thai Rastafarians. We had already become accustomed to the noticeable lack of presence of black people in these parts. We were a commodity, folks openly staring, gaping, even tripping over themselves as we walked by.

Down Khao San we went. Picking up the random bangle here, examining the silk purse there, watching the traditionally-dressed women hawk little wooden frogs that, with the help of a small instrument, imitated the call of their real-life counterparts. I had my eyebrows done for one dollar. We stopped to have some gelato. We walked around a bit more, then were off to negotiate our tuk-tuk home.

"250 baht," he said. I eyed him in disbelief, before asserting that 100 baht was my final price. A cardinal rule of negotiation is to always begin lower than your actual price, but I knew I was fair, and I hate feeling cheated. He tried to bargain me up, but I refused (some of you know my stubborn side).

"I am only a student," I insisted. "We came here for 100 baht, we are going home for 100 baht. That's it."

I was tired, and not having much trouble remaining firm. I conspicuously glanced over toward the row of tuk-tuk drivers, all eagerly positioned to serve one of Khao San Road's rich, naieve patrons.

"Ping-Pong," I heard the man say. He repeated it several times, but I had no idea his meaning. As I began to walk away, he followed and handed me a card. In neat, bold face type, I made out the phrase to which he pointed:

PING PONG SEX SHOW

Startled, I knocked his hand away in disgust. The man was upset at such an affront, an unusual response of agression and emotion from me in an uber-polite culture. He immediately arranged our tuk-tuk home. The price: 100 baht.

The moment of anger lingered but soon passed as we found ourselves again riding through the windy streets of the city, away from all of the madness. I had been so offended by the man's proposal. A Sex Show?!?!?? Who did he think I was? Leia quietly shook her head (as she tends to do), and quietly responded, "I wonder how many people answer 'yes,' though?" I didn't want to think of the answer.

A little ways ahead, we saw some tourists, all women, taking pictures in another tuk-tuk. All smiles, they laughed and waved, as our tuk-tuk drivers passed each other back and forth along the open roadways. They shouted to us and yelled, American-college-style, in our direction. We waved and yelled playfully back - it felt good to be in Thailand on tuk-tuk.

Until we came to the stoplight. The girls' tuk-tuk made a sharp right turn away from us. Our driver smiled and pointed after them, saying the words that broke my heart; "Ping-Pong Show."

This time, I didn't need any card to spell out the scenario for me. Leia and I looked at each other with a deep sense of sadness. The girls in the tuk-tuk had probably been excited to see us because they had assumed that we, too, would see the ping pong show that night. Those girls, had, like thousands and thousands of tourists come and gone, answered "yes" to the invitation to participate in the first lair - sex shows - of what is one of the most renown sex trades and trafficking industries in the world. While at their open bar and show on the first floor of the tall buildings you find in Bangkok, they would probably be offered menus from which they might choose sexual acts to watch or participate in. For men, some may even be invited to the upper floors -- working brothels -- or whisked away to where the youngest, most vulnerable victims of sex trafficking - children - would be held captive for the enjoyment (ie, abuse) of tourists from around the world.

Ping. Pong.

Do we not know that lives hang in the balance because of the games we choose to play?

(from Amey's journal, June 19)Leia Adelle Photographyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764657185268317545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652566550270178165.post-18154080221111226592008-06-30T12:04:00.002-04:002008-06-30T12:30:17.816-04:00Lucky Buddha(We're playing catch up here, as we haven't had much Internet access ... but I'll be posting a few reflections and working on posting some pictures soon! Thanks everyone!)

"How did you get here? You must be very lucky."

Lucky indeed.

A morning of headstrong wayward travels via tuk-tuk, negotiated by broken English and a hint of pristine ego led us on an adventure through Bangkok. Early on I understood the scam in play - if we could be convinced to look, or better yet buy, at the stores our drivers casually drove us past, they would then be compensated with coupons for petrol (the rising cost of which we all share both burden and disdain).

I couldn't blame them. Everything I'd ever read or heard indicated that our drivers were only one of thousands of men working to support their families in the nearby slum villages. So I didn't mind too much being hasseled. I take advantage of resources and privileges that I didn't earn - rather, that I was just "lucky" enough to be born into - each and every day of my life. So what if my, our, playing the novice and naieve helped a struggling tuk-tuk driver catch a break?

It was a little too much too soon, through. Hot, tired, and frustrated, our group obliged briefly before we all caught on. At any rate, we found ourselves, after having just had a discussion of how we chose not to enter or casually peruse religious sites not our own, doing just that -- being driven around to various temples and shrines of Buddha. One in particular, known as "Lucky Buddha."

"Lucky Buddha"'s outer court was nondescript. Through two small doors, we could just make out the form of the oversized gold-leafed Buddha laying peacefully on his side, the lucid flames from incense offerings dancing across his sacred belly. One lone dedicant knealt on the deep burgundy carpet, reciting prayers at Buddha's feet. The statue took up the entirety of the narrow space.

We had no idea where we were. That is when our local guide found us. Curious as to such strange-looking visitors deep in the heart of Bangkok, he asked first if we were Buddhists. We gently shook our heads "no." Now even more piqued at our hodge-podge of pilgrims, he inquired further, shocked that we were completely ignorant of the ground upon which we stood.

According to our eager informant, we were at one of the most sacred sites in all of Thailand. I again glanced around hesitantly at the secluded ordinariness of our location. Apparently, "Lucky Buddha" is only open on one, occasionally two days each year. That week, thousands of monks and pilgrims had traveled to offer prayers and thanksgivings to the Buddha who, so calmly reclined, could bring them closer to good fortunes and the kind of nirvana we are all guilty of associating them with.

Not only were we dumbfounded tourists in the presence of rare opportunity - we had paid very little to get here, and were worthy of deep envy from even the most devout of followers.

"You must be very lucky."

I wouldn't call it luck. But, I was honored. Even in the midst of "working us" to earn coupons, our taxi drivers had arranged our alighting upon such a holy place. The frustration and simply annoyance at being taken to see something so unimportant for our faith (like, a big ol' golden Buddha), was understandably too much for some. At the next site, we abruptly abandoned our tuk-tuks, who refused to comply with our wishes to simply return home.

Still, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of sacredness, blessing, honor, and in the Buddhist tradition, "luck," at our finding Buddha. For Buddhists, this was a jewel in a crown. And for me, a Christian, this was a point of entry into a people and a land that I have not known. A rare, real glimpse into the life, love, and tradition of those I seek to know as my neighbors. A moment to realize the grace and sacred reality hidden behind the nondescript facades of the slums, the brothels, the sites of oppression that I was here to engage. If we were willing to peer into the heart of such dark places, and give room for our eyes to adjust, we might be able to make out the form of Christ illuminated by the dancing flames of love and hope, service and sacrifice, heart and humanity, all unearthed from a broken existence.

Perhaps we, too, could sense in our temple encounter the significance of a most sacred, most holy treasure, resting before us, even if we were not yet "enlightened" to know, or fully see, what was before our very eyes. That the steps our feet traced throughout southeast Asia were indeed treading upon holy ground.

Lucky Buddha. I am not Buddhist, or Buddish, or anything related.

But, I do Believe.

To be in this place - right here, right now - is divine appointment. Beyond planning. Beyond coordination. Beyond what my eyes can see. To be in this place - right here, right now - is to find treasure in clay jars, in earthen vessels. To be in this place - right here, right now - is a pure gift. And as the doors to Buddha were opened as if just for us, Lord, I pray that You would open the doors to Your heart just for us this summer. May we not most this moment. May we not hesitate to be drawn into Your love. May we not fail to marvel at Your beauty.

We are very lucky. Lucky indeed.

(from Amey's journal, June 20)Leia Adelle Photographyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764657185268317545noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652566550270178165.post-89777535937889208642008-06-21T06:38:00.002-04:002008-06-21T06:52:54.192-04:00Khap Khun Kha ...Greetings, everyone, from the beautiful land of Thailand, and now from southern India!!

Internet seems to be quite rare, and with so much travel, we aren't in the same place for long. However, we thank you for keeping up with us, and for keeping us in your prayers!!! We are encountering difficult work, and will be able to post more often (and with pictures!) in the upcoming weeks. For now, though, please know that we are safe, well-fed, loved-on, and encouraged as we enter the heart of Christ through some of the poorest of the poor in our world.

Just as an itinerary update ... we spent our first week in Bangkok, where Word Made Flesh has previously established and is now newly establishing a community. We had an amazing time (ya'll know we love Thai food!), but were encountered with stark realities of the slums and the commercial sex industry in the city (more reflections later ...)

We were super excited, though, to meet Tim and Amy Hupe, along with baby Ella and soon to be born baby Ariel, who have JUST moved into the city to begin ministering and working there. They were so awesome -- while they have been planning this for quite some time, they picked up and moved with all they could manage to bring. Baby Ella is quite possibly the most amazing baby on the planet, and Amy and Tim are blessed with positive spirits in the midst of EVERYTHING (did I mention that Amy is 8+ months pregnant?!?) Please keep them in your prayers as they find a place to live in one of the largest slums in the city, prepare for the new baby, and simply enter into a state of deep learning and listening - from the Thai language and culture, to the needs and cries of those whom they will serve ...

We have landed now in Chennai in southern India -- it is almost completely untouched by the West, and we have seen almost NO foreigners in our area of town (as Chris Heuertz, director of Word Made Flesh who is traveling with us describes each place we visit ... "Just a heads up, this is real LOCAL ...") So, while it is difficult in ways (from the heat, to almost being run over, to the constant staring), we are really blessed to enjoy and experience such beautiful lands.

We will be in Chennai for another few days before taking the train to Kolkata, flying to Kathmandu, visiting Delhi before heading back to work in Kolkata for the remainder of the summer.

There is so much that we could say, and it is hard to know where to begin ... but we thank you for your thoughts and prayers toward us through it all. We will write again soon ...

Love,
Amey & LeiaLeia Adelle Photographyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764657185268317545noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652566550270178165.post-40802326182980978822008-06-10T14:41:00.002-04:002008-06-10T14:49:44.938-04:00Guess Who's Back!?It's LEIA!!!!!

Tired from a long journey with the Middle East Travel Seminar, we just want to give a huge WELCOME HOME to her :) For those of you don't know, Leia had the opportunity to travel with students from other seminaries throughout the historical-biblical lands: Syria, Jordan, Egypt (Sinai), Israel, and Greece ... whew!

There's plenty more posting to come on this trip (and yes, we leave in less than a week for south Asia! Talk about a full passport!), and lots of reflections for the website, so stayed tuned. Also, you can look forward to some very special posts this week of our last few photoshoots before heading out for good!

So, welcome back to Leia ... here's a "self-portrait" of Leia on top of Mount Sinai at sunrise (they rode a camel and hiked to get there!)

Leia Adelle Photographyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764657185268317545noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652566550270178165.post-57760470703212003082008-06-05T23:53:00.002-04:002008-06-06T00:27:48.452-04:00Koinonia Coffee House: Open for Business!

Koinonia.

It's the Greek word for fellowship, but in West Jackson, Mississippi, the word means so much more. In a place where "hope" doesn't come in pre-wrapped packages, co-owners Alexis Spencer-Byers and Lee Harper (**who happens to be the mother of Leia Adelle herself!!**) have forged a new path for change, casting the vision for a bustling venue that serves up far more than your average latte. From the spacious layout and comfortable seating, to the sense of warm hospitality and cheerful greeting you are met with at the door, Koinonia is doing what was once thought impossible in west Jackson - cultivating community.

With the grand opening of Koinonia Coffee House happening today, we are thrilled at the promise of this new endeavor. Though still in her infancy, Koinonia will undoubtedly grow strong - we can't wait to watch her as she grows! There are good things in the air, and in west Jackson, the bottom line is clear. Whether its coffee or community, at Koinonia, your cup is sure to overflow.

Here are some promotional shots we took a few weeks ago as the final touches were coming into place:

Congratulations, Koinonia!!! Though the forecast declared clear skies for late afternoon, we arrived at the site for our morning, outdoor wedding with a hint of worry. We weren't sure that there was a backup plan.

But Chrisann came through like a champion! Through moving the wedding in an unseen, unplanned for Conservatory, pulling together beautiful directions, changing the entire flow and layout of the wedding, dealing with less-than-helpful site staff, keeping the bride comfortable (who, once they double-booked her room, was forced to change in someone's office!), and still keeping a beautiful smile through it all!

So, if you're ever in need of a wedding coordinator or event planner in the MD/DC/VA area, call Chrisann. She owns her own company, kenBtaylormade (a sweet combination of her daughter's names!). She loves what she does, loves to work with people, and she wants to see you happy and stress-free on your special day!

Thanks so much, Chrisann, for keeping us on top of things and just being awesome! Fed up with the drama of breaking up, they both realized that what the other one needed was simply a break. And so, two friends, committed to being open and honest about themselves and their relationship habits (so easy, since nothing romantic would ever happen between them!), formed what came to be known as "The Pact."

Mike and Lanette committed themselves to remain single, dating no one, for 6 months. An entire half a year dedicated to prayer, reflection, and journaling together about communication, struggles, hopes, disappointments, and desires. The Pact began on November 18, 2006. Needless to say, it took far less than six months for them to realize how much they had in common, how much their friendship had grown, how much trust and respect they had for each other, and how, somewhere along the journey, the slowly realized they were falling in love. In each other's eyes they saw vision and promise for a blessed future together. In each other's hands they found the strength to pick up the pieces and begin again. In each other's presence they found the serenity that they had been looking for.

We are all amazed and thankful they finally found what was always right in front of them.

And so, it was an honor to photograph the intimate moments of commitment between two best friends. in the midst of all sorts of "technical difficulties," from rain to sound to seating, all that mattered on this day was that two would become one. And in the presence of the closest family and friends, that is exactly what they pledged to always be.

A few details ...

One of our favorites ...

Mike and Lanette had their own logo! With a family move to Apex, NC, in the middle of Junior year, Heather found herself entering the uncharted waters of a brand new high school. What she couldn't have known was that Leith, the dear friend she met on that first day, would one day ask her to be his forever.

The buds of the high school romance didn't immediately bloom. Though Leith asked Heather to accompany him to prom senior year, they had an amazing time -- but Heather wasn't ready for a relationship. According to Heather, "he liked me more than I liked him." It seemed that their friendship was to be nothing more, and when graduation came and went, the two friends gradually lost touch.

Separated by years apart, lives lived, and Heather's time spent teaching in Nicaragua, it wasn't until Heather's sister -- on a mission to get Heather "caught up" with the 21st century -- encouraging Heather to get a Facebook page and reconnect with old friends -- that Heather and Leith once again found each other. Much like the long-term friendship that started on one fateful first day, Heather and Leith's first date, an extended session of laughter, conversation, and connection, was also a fateful first. They haven't left each other's side since.

And so, to announce their joyous news to friends and family, Heather asked us if we'd consider a quick shoot to grab "just one" good shot for their announcements. Somewhere between Leith's amazing blue eyes (seriously -- we did NOT have to touch these up!), Heather's infectious smile, and a "tickle-fight" or two (can we say semi-pro grass wrestling out of love?!), we snagged more than a few that we loved! As they prepare for their intimate wedding ceremony this summer (sadly, we'll be in India by then ...), we were more than honored to contribute in some small way.

Congratulations Heather and Leith -- may God continue to bless you in all that you do! Without further ado, meet Heather & Leith!!!

Leith "explains" to Heather how to tell the left hand from the right (the left hand makes an "L" shape, in case you don't know the trick!) These shots took place on a day that was surprisingly beautiful for the indecisive North Carolina spring weather, and we found some great locations as we traipsed around the Duke campus.

(Re)Introducing Jared and Shauna! They're historic, as they were our first engagement shoot!! Aren't they awesome?

So very GQ, in our opinion!

Those strong hands of Jared's can also be found writing songs, leading worship, and playing sweet melodies for gorgeous Shauna:

We're pretty sure that this one belongs in some sort of jewelry ad campaign ... maybe "Every Kiss begins with Kay" ... or, should it be, "Every Kiss beings with LEI-a Adelle Photography" lol ... Just one day after Christmas. An underwater earthquake caused a series of devastating tsunamis in the Indian Ocean that pounded along the coastlines of more than eleven countries and inundated multiple coastal towns with waves of water.

Dave and Bethel, having not yet met, were both moved to join in the relief efforts. As it happened, on his first visit to this particular church - Bethel's church, he heard of the many mission relief teams going to Thailand to assist in the recovery effort. While there were multiple teams going, Dave signed up for the team leaving in February immediately. As it were, Dave had been vacationing in Thailand and had left the night before the tsunami hit. He felt that God spared his life, so he vowed to help in whatever way he could.

Turns out, Bethel too signed up for that February relief team. She had previously been unable t go, but when her pastor announced that they had changed the date, it coincided perfectly with her week break from her job teaching English. Working side by side in the midst of such devastation, they found themselves in awe of the power of loving and serving our neighbors. Though interest was stirred during the trip (Bethel denies it!!), they never could have imagine that one day they would stand in awe of each other.

Fast forward to this last fall. As their love and friendship grew through various ups and downs, Dave chose to take a leave of absence from his law school in Canada for a year to come and live in North Carolina while Bethel finished up her M.Div degree (how amazing is he?!) And, as all love tales heighten, Dave took the step to ask Bethel to be his bride. Over Thanksgiving weekend, Dave took Bethel to one of her most beloved college spots -- the infinity pool at Pepperdine -- asking her to walk infinitely into eternity with him. Dave, endearing and kind, created a beautiful proposal for sweet Bethel, including a slideshow of memories, video blessings from her closest friends, and three dozen roses -- red, yellow, and white -- to match her tri-colored gold ring.

Dave and Bethel have become treasured friends of ours, so when we were looking for couples to model, they eagerly agreed -- they are also dear friends of Word Made Flesh, and were more than happy to help us as we raise support. We will miss their wedding this August in Canada, but there may be a December appearance from us at their traditional Korean wedding in Seoul this December ... *smile*

Stay tuned! But until then, meet sweet Dave and Bethel!!!

A few artistic shots to play with color and texture:

These two are just so in love! Compassionate, caring, and genuinely committed not just to one another, but to working together to serve and love other people around the world. And, like you wouldn't believe, these two are hilarious. We found ourselves wandering through Brightleaf Square in downtown Durham. Bethel's favorite coffee shop was closed that day, so we just opted for some pictures outside of it!

There were yummy (abandoned) train tracks just out back ... lots of fun!

So happy! I had connected with a group of creative friends -- photographers, musicians, web designers -- for a school project, and was soon "adopted" by my big brother Miguel. He was great -- there to help me through some really difficult "high school drama" moments, a bona fide mentor in everything from the piano to Photoshop, and super-encouraging about the possibilities of life (not to mention, Miguel sent me SO MUCH free software when I never would have been able to afford it otherwise ... everything I know about graphics, I got from Miguel).

In fact, Miguel was the first person I tried my "free postage" trick with (his idea, my lab test, lol). Did you know that if you send a card, putting your (the sender) address where you normally put the "to" (the recipient) address, and put your penpal (the recipient) address where you normally put the return address, and you drop it in the mail with NO POSTAGE ... that the US Mail service will stamp no postage and "return to sender" ... which will have been listed as the person you were sending it to?? Genius, lol.

At any rate, when he heard about what Leia and I were doing, he gladly signed us up for his forthcoming wedding (and I can't wait to show you those pictures!!) So, a few weeks ago, we headed up to Shockhoe Slip in Richmond, VA -- a halfway point between North Carolina and DC -- to capture some pre-wedding pictures. Meet Mike and Lanette ...

The skies dramatically opened and rain began to fall pretty soon after we began our shoot, which was of great relief to our pollen-laden landscape (seriously, in North Carolina and Virginia, everything turns bright yellow come April and May!), but was a little traumatic for our baby cameras! So, we ducked inside a cute restaurant for some salads, Shirley Temples, and this sweet moment:

We decided to bear the rain a bit, thanks to Mike's big black umbrella. He admits that he didn't exactly "see" what we were going for, but this little "let the love rain down" series made the wetness worth it:

Before heading out, we saw this great wall and thought of Mike and Lanette having superstar status. Unfortunately, Mike was quickly accused of treason, having jeopardized his status as an official Washington Redskins fan. To that, Mike has a brief statement: Before we took this shot, we verified with the Department of Redskins Fans Affairs that this wasn't a Cowboys star. I have the paperwork.

On with the Dallas Cowboys, er, I mean, the nice shots against the wall ... *smile*

Stay tuned for the wedding pictures ...

**Disclaimer: I can hear some of you now: "So, Amey ... you met this random older-guy-dude on the Internet in high school? " LOL. In no way, shape, or form do I think you should let your children run free online!!! I met Mike as I was looking for mentors to learn from, and was totally legitimized by his (a) willingness to communicate with my parents -- he *almost* made it to my high school graduation, and (b) that I didn't meet just one person, but a great group of friends who were actually friends of friends in the various MD/DC/VA Christian music circles, known then by aliases such as [insert shoutout] 6-3brotha, j276, latina_flava, 11-2-Heaven, springhonie, Altar_Ego, dragonflyy, Nsashible, cutieerica, and more [end shoutout] ... Alex, a past undergrad, continued through the prestigious program at the Law School. Though they ran in similar circles for some time, once Alex finally laid eyes on Ashley (as their dear friend Charles Marsh put it!), he immediately knew she was the one. They soon were engaged to be wed, and two years later, "Mejiaz" (a sweet combination of Ashley's maiden and married names!) is going long and strong.

Ashley now serves as Director of Women's Ministries at the Center for Christian Study in Charlottesville. After graduating from law school and passing the New York bar, Alex looked into his heart and found strength to go against the corporate grain, pursuing his music career fulltime. His self-titled debut album dropped in January, a driving collection of songs located at the crossroads of a passionate pursuit and authentic engagement of the heart of God. Even with so much going on, he's one of the most humble and caring guys you'll run across -- so evident in the photos as he interacts with Ashley -- with a great sense of humor, too (also evidenced in the photos!) Definitely check him out at Alex Mejias Online and hit him up on iTunes!

A few weekends ago, Ashley and Alex stepped out on the downtown mall in Charlottesville for a few pictures. Since they never had an opportunity to take formal engagement shots before they got married, this was the perfect opportunity to casually capture their romance on film. A&A, thank you SO much for helping us out! We had a blast at your shoot, and even though it was unexpectedly short-lived (wink, wink), we had a great time anyhow! We hope to see you soon!

And now ... introducing Ashley & Alex!!!

Ashley cracking up at Alex's antics (oooh, check that alliteration!):

There's a quaint little park right by the downtown mall ... Well ... harder done than said (smile ... )

So, I promise to catch everyone up on all that is happening ... we have met some AMAZING people/friends/models/supporters and it has really, really been a blessing! And, we can't wait to share it with you!

If you haven't figured it yet, Leia has already gone off to METS ... the Middle East Travel Seminar ... she'll come back for a week in June just before we leave for Thailand, Nepal, and India! Whew! Things are a little lonely without our lead photographer, and her spunk, but I'm really excited for her! If she gets a chance or two, she'll be posting a blog or two from one of the five countries she'll be visiting. And of course, expect some blog-love once she returns!!!

Check back often ... I'll be leaving eye candy soon! Thanks for all of you who keep touching base with us and showing your support. Bless you!

Love,
AmeyLeia Adelle Photographyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13764657185268317545noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4652566550270178165.post-83996197954996588742008-04-27T21:23:00.004-04:002008-04-27T21:38:16.765-04:00Catching Up ...

Whew!
